In the mountains of Guatemala at a height of some 2,500 meters above sea level, Henkel employees set to work helping people to refurbish their village homes. In the summer of 2009, 21 Henkel volunteers from six countries met in the small mountain village. There they helped the inhabitants decorate and renovate their rather simple huts into homes worthy of the name, improved and adapted to the climatic conditions prevailing in the region.

Within three days, nine houses had been provided with whitewashed walls, sturdy concrete floors, stable stoves with a proper flue leading through the roof, and water filters for the provision of drinking water. Now, a total of 40 houses have already been improved as a result of the MIT initiative.

The “Tamaho” nursery school project was begun about four years ago by Henkel South Africa. Financial support for the project was provided by MIT and through private donations from employees and former members of the Henkel management. The nursery school is located near the Henkel site in southeastern Johannesburg in a residential area inhabited mainly by colored people, a township named “Tamaho”, and is attended by 37 children, who are cared for by trained nursery school teachers. The nursery school facilities are also used in the evening for specific events, such as information sessions on HIV/AIDS for members of the parish.

The project is in the focus but without the people it wouldn’t work. Thanks especially again to Kirsten Sanchez Marin who initiated this wonderful project and coordinated the field work with all Henkel employees. Besides her challenging work at Henkel La Luz she is also very ambitious to support the people in Guatemala. Saludos to all team member and hope to meet you again!
