In Haiti, devastated at the beginning of the year by one of the worst earthquakes imaginable, hope is beginning to glimmer. With massive international aid, including donations from Henkel, it has at least been possible to quickly treat the innumerable injured.

The bare statistics alone were shocking enough: 200,000 dead, innumerable people injured and two million Haitians homeless. The aid organization International Health Partners did not need to say much more in order to solicit – and receive – help from a great many companies, Henkel included. Henkel’s donation amounted to 20,000 euros (channeled via Henkel Friendship Initiative e.V. to the aid organization I.S.A.Rr) plus personal care products, household detergents and, especially useful, packs of wound adhesive, given to the organizations Humanplus, UNICEF and International Health Partners.

Now Henkel has received a letter of thanks from Alex Harris, Director of IHP International Health Partners, in which he states: “Without your kind support, much of our aid work would have simply not been possible”, plus a brief video.

Harris also states that further aid would be most welcome: “Only a very few houses have so far been rebuilt. And now we are entering the rainy season and in two months the hurricane season will be upon us.”

So – as Head of Henkel’s Donation Management team Sandra Lorch explains – for this among many compelling reasons, the MIT Children’s Projects Committee at Henkel has decided to make an extra budget available for children’s projects in Haiti. The Committee will shortly be making its final decisions on the funding applications received.

Watch the video from International Health Partners: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBp74BFEJfw

But the support did not stop there. In March 2009, 23 Henkel employees from different plants around China journeyed to Hanwang Elementary School in Meanzhu/Sichuan. The earthquake had caused the school buildings to collapse almost instantly, killing 228 students and 19 teachers. In addition to money and in-kind donations for the victims, the employees took active part in the arrangement of school lessons and handed over donations to the children.

The “Tamaho” nursery school project was begun about four years ago by Henkel South Africa. Financial support for the project was provided by MIT and through private donations from employees and former members of the Henkel management. The nursery school is located near the Henkel site in southeastern Johannesburg in a residential area inhabited mainly by colored people, a township named “Tamaho”, and is attended by 37 children, who are cared for by trained nursery school teachers. The nursery school facilities are also used in the evening for specific events, such as information sessions on HIV/AIDS for members of the parish.

Whenever there is a Christmas or flea market in Viersen or its environs, she is there to sell an array of attractive textile goods which the AWA team brings back from a sewing school in West Africa. But she also carries out other voluntary tasks involving finding sponsors in Germany for children in Benin and Togo.

Every year, a delegation from the association travels to West Africa in order to bring donations in kind that have been provided by the various sponsors and to ensure that everything in the sponsored institutions is as it should be.

I would like to warmly thank you all people who partecipated in the funds raising in Italy in june in favour of the Abruzzo Hearthquake. 364 italians employees partecipated and we collected 6.000 euro, the Henkel Friendship Initiative e.V. donated 25.000 euro and 6000 euro have been collected from external companies in Germany. I visited l’Aquila in July to scout what we could support with money collected and I have been impressed by the situation. Many people are living within camps which you can see anywhere. Many others are guests of the Goverment within Hotels which are located close to the seaside. Firemen are at work and they are doing structures to save buildings and to make streets and places safe. The center of L’Aquila is completly closed, none can enter and all activities are closed (banks, shops, ….). Within the center no one could restart his/her job because buidlings are not safe. Only few are working at the moment. Restructuring is not yet started. The hearth is still moving and people are quite afraid. One of the major need is to envolve people in activities. Without a job or concrete activities to run, people get lost and desperate and phsycological deseases dramatically increase.

Here I met Mrs Lea Contestabile who is running the project which we would like to support. The project of MUBAQ (childrens museum of L’Aquila association) aims to build a center (with a number of very small and little houses) which can offer to childrens the possibility to partecipate to artistic and cultural activities which have the objective to help them to go on and to elaborate what they experienced and their losses. The association is now working within teints and camps. We are waiting the start up of the project to release the money collected.
